Bust of
the Savior
Andrew Butterfield Fine Art is a scholarly endeavor called in to research and attribute works of antiquity to their respective artists. Specializing in works from the Italian Renaissance, Mr. Butterfield worked with numerous art scholars and critics to attribute this piece to Gian Lorenzo Bernini, age 17 (it having long-believed to be the work of his own, more worksmanly-father). Although he carved it in collaboration with his father Pietro, this early masterpiece displays the first signs of Gian Lorenzo's unequalled genius both as maker of portraits and as an innovator in the interpretation of sacred iconography. Designed in conjunction with a 2016 exhibition.
