An American
Portrait
Tom Wesselmann passed away in 2004, leaving a tremendous breadth of work, disciplines, and influence behind. Created for a retrospective exhibition (and in deep partnership with his estate) this catalogue aimed to take a closer look into the artist's process. Long regarded as a provocateur in late Pop Art, his work developed well beyond more familiar territory of his predecessors. Rarely content to work in one medium, paintings became sculptures that became entire installations. A highlight of creating this book was working directly with his wife, Claire Selley (pictured working with her husband in the last image, below). Spending long nights in the foundation's archives, poring over crate after crate of notebooks, sketches, and negatives left behind.
